As first noted by PCGamer, George R.R. Martin, the Author behind the A Song of Ice and Fire series (Game of Thrones), recently did an interview for the Chicago-based news network WTTW, where he stated “My work on it was actually done years ago.” In reference to the upcoming game, Elden Ring.

This statement came during the interview when Martin was was questioned about the differences between writing for his previous works and writing for video games.

My work on it was actually done years ago. These games they’re like movies, they take a long time to develop,” basically they wanted a world created to set the game in, they wanted world building as a big factor in fantasy and science fiction. You’re not really talking about the characters and the plot, but the setting is almost as important as everything else: Tolkien’s Middle Earth, Robert E Howard’s Hyborean age, the Foundation universe of Isaac Asimov. I worked up you know a fairly detailed background for them, and then they took it from there so really it’s been several years since I’ve last seen them.”

While Martin says ” It’s been several years since I’ve last seen them.” he does state that FromSoftware would “come in periodically and show me some monsters they’d designed, or the latest special effects or the cool things.” In the interview, Martin also says “I have played some games, but I am not the biggest video gamer.” and “I’ll be as excited as anyone else to see it.

Elden Ring is an upcoming action RPG in the souls-like genre, that has been made famous by its developer, FromSoftware.

There is an interesting remark from Martin during the interview where he says “it’s a sequel to a video game that came out a few years ago called, Dark Souls.” While this could just be a mistake on the part of Martin as he did state he isn’t the biggest video gamer; it does mean that there may be a chance that Elden Ring is a part of the Dark Souls universe in some way.

With Elden Ring do out on January 21, 2022, we wont have to wait long to find out. I myself, however, seriously doubt there will be any kind of connection between the two series.
