Google opened its first studio back in 2019, in an effort to create exclusive games for its cloud-based gaming platform, Stadia. Along side the studios founding, google also announced that it would be bring on industry veteran, Jade Raymond, as studio head to lead up all game development. Now, less than two years later, Raymond has left google and both of Google’s games studios are closing.

Given our focus on building on the proven technology of Stadia as well as deepening our business partnerships, we’ve decided that we will not be investing further in bringing exclusive content from our internal development team SG&E, beyond any near-term planned games.
Since its launch in December 2019, Stadia has yet to set the world on fire. This is possible do to competing cloud-based platforms, such as Microsoft’s X cloud or Nvidia’s Geforce Now, offering what are widely considered to be more consumer friendly and comprehensive alternatives. Now, with google forgoing first-party exclusive games for the platform, the allure of Stadia seems to have diminished even more, which could affect Google’s ability to gain more third-party partners for the platform.
